Learning Objectives -- Some trainers and facilitators prefer using either a meeting icebreaker or team building exercise focused on the learning objectives related to the meeting, training program, or goal of the group. Others prefer using an unrelated exercise just to break the ice. However, each icebreaker is dynamic and has both intended and unintended consequences. Consider this prior to the event so you can maximize the experience and build a cohesive meeting.
Give everyone a blank 8 ½-by-11-inch sheet of paper. Tell them the following: “We are going to do something that will show us some important things about communication. Pick up your sheet of paper and hold it in front of you. Close your eyes and follow my directions—and no peeking -- you cannot ask questions.”

Ownership -- First, icebreakers tend to work best when participants have taken ownership of the activity chosen by the facilitator. You must put five key elements in place.
For those who opt out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps ask them to be "observers" and see if they are comfortable providing a debriefing at the end of the event. Provide them something constructive to do during the exercise. When given the freewill to choose, people will take greater ownership of their participation.
By using team building exercises and meeting icebreakers you can make your next meeting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], class, or team building event something dynamic and productive.
Ask the group why no one’s piece of paper matched yours. You will probably get responses like “You didn’t let us ask questions!” or “Your directions could be interpreted in different ways.” Then, lead them in a discussion about the need for effective communication.
After the tearing is complete,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], say something like “Now open your eyes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and let’s see what you have. If I did a good job of communicating and you did a good job of following my directions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of your sheets should look the same!”

I have been a teacher, management consultant, and meeting facilitator for over twenty years. In the hundreds of classes and seminars I have taught, I have learned one truth -- people learn quicker if you make classes and meetings fun and interesting.
Give each person a few moments to think of an adjective starting with the same first letter in his or her first name (e.g. "Great Greg"). Begin by modeling it yourself. Then go around the group asking each person to state their name/adjective combination. During various points of the exercise, or at the end, ask volunteers to remember and repeat each of the names and adjectives volunteered so far. Provide prizes to those who do the best job.
This last element is crucial and overlooked in many cases,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Make an announcement at the beginning of an exercise to insure participants understand they are not "bound" to participate in the activity.
Ask participants to form equal size groups. Give each group a napkin and ask them to fold the napkin as small as possible. However, it must be large enough for members of the team to place their toe on the napkin.
How many meetings have you been to that are just the same old thing -- boring gatherings you cannot wait to leave. Most meetings are poorly managed and non-productive.

One of my favorite team building exercises is called the "Terrorist Toxic Popcorn Situation." This is an easy exercise for both adults and teens. The goal is to decontaminate a can of "toxic" popcorn that has been secretly placed in the room by "terrorists." Your team must quickly come up with a plan of action; assemble tools and equipment, transfer the material into a "safe" container before the "toxic" substance explodes. This is a great game to identify the planners, doers, and thinkers in your group. It also demonstrates the importance of having a good plan.

Excited about my tentative discovery, I told a few of my psychology professors. They traded knowing looks and laughed at me. One of them said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],"You should go live in California."
Shortly after my epiphany, I told Izzy my ideas. He was stunned for a moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his eyes blank, distant, searching for an answer. Then a light formed in his eyes and a look of intense concentration formed on his features.
And now, Quantum Field Psychology is the graduate course in the series. It defines and describes the waveforms generated by the mind, underlying the secrets of personal magnetism, concentration, emotional harmony and successful relationships. It reveals a breakthrough set of principles to help you leap beyond the blocks and impediments that have held you back for
years.
Searing through my mind like an implosion of light, I suddenly saw connections between modern-day psychologies and physics, and realized many principles of psychology could be explained by applications of quantum physics and Einstein's relativity.
Over the years, I studied the major fields of physics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to discover the many parallels to the world of psychology. I studied Einstein, Planck, Bohr,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Shroedinger and many others.
After earning the Ph.D. in 1984, I spent years as a psychotherapist, learning what worked in therapy and what didn't, refining the theory and putting it all together. I worked with thousands of patients in many different environments - private practice, state hospitals, prisons,
community mental health centers, forensic settings, court rooms, you name it.
Finally, after decades of preparation, I sat freezing in a tiny room in the Italian Alps in 2004, in Aviano, Italy, composing the most recent edition of this theory. It was there, teaching for the US military, that Quantum Field Psychology was born. The most complete theory of psychology ever created, integrating all the major fields of psychology under one umbrella, a new paradigm.
Quantum Field Psychology expresses thought and emotion in mathematical terms, describes psychological defenses in differential equations, draws parallels to the worlds of electricity and magnetism, gravitational fields, expands on the space-time-mind continuum and many others, linking the fields of psychology, philosophy and physics into one unified field theory, or theory of everything (TOE).
But there was one brilliant physicist at NASA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dr. Isadore (Izzy) Adler, who listened. Izzy was a short, stocky guy, trained at City College in New York City, always a deep furrow across his brow as he was absorbed in thought, always a smile on his face.
A set of principles and methods you can easily develop to focus and use your mind to create vast wealth, success, great relationships and a profound inner peace that transcends understanding.
It was an epiphany that almost knocked me off my feet.

In 1999, I went overseas to teach college for the University of
Maryland, to review the entire field of psychology again and to create this theory in it's current form. Teaching in Japan, Korea and Europe, I taught 14 different psychology courses for Maryland.

I began working at NASA in July 1967, at 17 years old, in a gifted student program. The scientists there were a great group of people, and gave me my start in science, research and publishing.
During that time I was a student at the University of Maryland, majoring in math and physics. By my junior year, I began taking courses in psychology. That was when it happened. One dark evening in November 1969, just months after NASA had put Neil Armstrong on the moon, I returned to my dorm from work. I began to compare some functions in physics to a lecture I

I came to study the works and teachings of many of the ancient mystery schools that still exist today, schools that were created long ago to preserve for humankind the true secrets of the mind and inner being, secrets hidden until the world was ready to awaken...that time is now.

And I delved into arcane knowledge kept hidden from the world at large for millenia, preserved by various secret societies. I dove into these musty volumes and devoured them, absorbing knowledge that unveils the enormous potential of the mind and inner self, potential to create success, wealth and well-being without limits!

He said, "Go work it out. Show the world how it all fits together. Then come tell me about it." Humming to himself, he turned on his heels and spun down the hall, back to his laboratory. Encouraged by Izzy and undaunted by critics, I began a life-long exploration of these principles. I returned to graduate school in 1980 at the University of Maryland, the number one graduate school in the USA for counseling psychology.
My intent was to absorb all the fields of psychology under one umbrella, to create this new theory. Noted psychologist Erik Erickson examined human development by looking at the conflicts we face at each stage of life.
• explained lessons of life
• how to survive in difficult circumstances
• why things have happened the way they have
• and offered tales of great adventure, tragedy, or love.
• Dr. Gene Cohen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], author of The Mature Mind, sees reminiscence as a critical brain activity and he recently remarked, “Autobiography for older adults is like chocolate for the brain.” Cohen cites a 2003 study by Eleanor Maguire and Christopher Frith that performed brain scans on people in their 70s and in their 30s while they were reminiscing. The found that the entire hippocampus is “lit up” in older adults, while 30 year olds only utilize one small part of the left hippocampal region.
In Later Adulthood, we’re concerned with life but facing the fact that death will come. According to Erickson, people in this stage of life should have new intellectual challenges and take on new roles and activities. Writing one’s autobiography fits the bill by providing that challenge but also giving them a chance for the necessity of introspection. Through life review, they may also decide,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “What’s my next pursuit?”
In Old Age (75 Years-Death), the psychosocial crisis is Immortality (vs. Extinction). This phase is focused on reflecting back on life. In this phase of life, Erickson cites the positive outcomes of life review, accepting death with a sense of integrity and without fear. Those who are successful in this phase do review and feel proud of their accomplishments and have a strong sense of integrity. Those who are unsuccessful during this phase will feel that their life has been wasted and will experience many regrets—leading to bitterness and despair. The developmental task, according to Erickson, is to cope with the physical changes of aging while seeing the “big picture” of life. Through reflection, individuals will see and know their own wisdom.

Reminiscence and Culture Change Work Hand in Hand
In addition to the wisdom passed down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we now know that reminiscence and life review is a proven way for older adults to gain self worth, learn more about themselves, and give the gift of their stories to the next generation. Recalling life stories should be encouraged at any juncture in one’s life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but primarily as people reach end of life.
Nursing home residents were interviewed with and without staff present and in either a reminiscence/life review format or a format more focused on the present time. The attitudes of residents toward staff improved with reminiscence and with the staff’s presence at interview.

A case study examined the use of a life review program with newly-relocated nursing home residents and it was found to decrease depression, while increasing orientation, perceived competence, and social interaction.
For thousands of years, people from diverse cultures around the world have passed on their traditions, beliefs, and advice through the telling of stories. These stories have achieved the following:
In Later Adulthood (60 years-74 years), Erickson documents the psychosocial crisis as Ego Integrity (vs. Despair). Ego integrity is the ego's accumulated assurance of its capacity for order and meaning. Despair is signified by a fear of one's own death, as well as the loss of self-sufficiency, and of loved partners and friends. At this stage, the central task for people to pursue is introspection because they must decide what will make their lives fulfilling and come together in a community. This stage can result in a development and sharing of wisdom—especially through storytelling.

• Dr. Robert Butler, author of Why Survive? Being Old in America, coined the term “life review” fifty years ago. Before that time, researchers and physicians saw reminiscence as just a stepping stone toward senility and dementia. He disagreed with this belief and proposed that, as people age, reminiscence and life review were a normal part of healthy aging. Now large bodies of research show the positive outcomes from reminiscence and life review.
Studies have shown that elder communities see remarkable results when reminiscence and life review is encouraged.
• Dr. Andrew Weil, author of Healthy Aging, encourages older adults to keep a record of wisdom, values, and life lessons in an ethical will, or heartfelt letter to loved ones. He writes, "An ordinary will … concerns the disposition of one's material possessions at death. An ethical will has to do with nonmaterial gifts: the values and life lessons that you wish to leave to others…At critical points in your life, take your ethical will and read it over. Add to it. Revise it and share it with people you care about. An ethical will helps you organize your own experience and focus on who you are. It's a spiritual inventory about what you want to pass on to others." Life stories can lead to a letter from the heart.
Decreases Disorientation, Improves Social Interaction
There are a number of studies that have shown that reminiscence and life review affects people’s lives in extraordinary ways. We will explore some of the outcomes from those studies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
A study demonstrated it is possible for older people with dementia to reminisce and that this is meaningful for them in particular, because of the losses associated with dementia. Another related case study used life review with groups of people with Alzheimer’s disease. They were assigned to groups with some participating in life reviews and others did not. Results showed significance for life review groups in decreased disorientation and improvement in social interaction.
Newly relocated nursing home residents underwent a study to examine if life review could prevent clinical depression,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Significant positive results were shown in reducing depression at the short-term testing stage with an additional decrease in depression and hopelessness at one year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Generativity, when it is developed, is the establishment and nurture of the next generation. Through stories, we help the next generation know what matters most and seek the best for their lives. There is a concern and commitment to family that’s passed on. Storytelling is vital for building generativity.
With female nursing home residents, a study randomly assigned participants to a reminiscence group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], current events discussion, or no treatment group. The results showed significant increases in life satisfaction in the reminiscence group.
