Once again I have been thinking of all the noise and by noise I mean the noise of WORDS. Everyone uses words to form an opinion. Opinions flourish on every subject. Every subject is built and dissected through words. Colorful, expressive, masterfully artistic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], plentiful words. So plentiful in fact, that whole thoughts get lost in the great telepathic ball of technology and space. We would have no room on the earth or in the sky, for words have grown so massive that they squeeze actions to death.
Words were once Sacred; for they stayed on the tongue for long periods of time before being shared for strengthening the bonds of love in Families and keeping safety in Nations. Words when used properly and for good purpose have God Almighty's great Power endowed in them. The power enables words to change helplessness into hopefulness. Words hold blessings. Words attract. Words give power to Intent. Through the thoughts held in the power of a word all life was created. Words manifest. What matters to your heart, physically manifests in your personal world. The Spirit of your Heart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can be understood by the Words of Love,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that rise up and are shared with others. And maybe it's because I need a quick vacation but, lately, I've been feeling especially trampled by these responsibilities. Also lately, I've been on a big time positive thinking kick. That is because it has become suddenly clear to me that the more I focus on the positive aspects of my life, the more open I become to the solutions I need. The more I can stop ranting and start appreciating, the more quickly the answers to my problems become clear. Obvious even. As long as I can get out of a negative space and into a positive one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], answers come to me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with greater surges of happiness.
It's not that everyone in my home is irresponsible. I actually feel (finally) that my kids are learning to be pretty conscientious little people. I'm not doing too much for them, it's just that running a home with three kids and two dogs and two businesses comes with a lot of daily tasks – which I do.
Like most moms of school age kids, I am one efficient mama in the mornings. Everything is done with the thought of what I can do while I'm waiting on something else. I get up, shower and wash my hair, unload the dishwasher, make my youngest child's breakfast and lunch, help my oldest child get ready for the early middle school bus, do a final check for homework, gym shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and give them all a rundown on after school plans. After they all get to school, I do the dishes, start the day's laundry, clean the bathrooms, vacuum the floors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wipe down the windows and mirrors and take the dogs for a walk. Then I start my workday.
I feel compacted, flattened by my own routine.
I am like a machine, an automaton. And I begin to get demoralized when I realize that I am so good at my routine that – if I don't do things – they don't get done. If I go to bed before someone else and I don't turn off all the lights beforehand, they are still blazing when I wake up in the morning.
It's fun to watch moms who also forgot to listen to advice of this kind. We can wipe up messes, tell three kids to put their shoes away, quiz someone for tomorrow's Spanish test and fry an egg – all at the same time.
"If you do something often enough – on a regular basis, it will become your job for the next 70 years," she warned. "Be very careful about what you do often and on a regular basis. Be very careful about the jobs you take on."
It's also not that the other members of my family don't care. It's that I've been doing it for as long as anyone can remember,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so it's no longer part of anyone else's routine to do any part of my job.
Also like a lot of moms with school age kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I relish routines because I know that if something's important enough to be done every day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it has to fit into my routine. Once it's in my daily schedule, it becomes something I don't question. I just do it.
Adventure is, by definition, not part of the routine, and so it wasn't accounted for. It got left out.
And so I have been keeping an ongoing Word document on my computer desktop in which I list all of the positive things, thoughts, ideas, and activities in my life. I try to add every little thing that brings me joy in the day to day routine/adventure of my life.
And then every so often, I take a look at how my life has plodded along and I realize that while I was doing the same old thing, I got old. My kids grew out of their toddler shoes.
Lately I've been feeling sort of crushed under the weight of my own responsibility.
Now that is something to be grateful for. And, for today, in this somewhat routine season of my life, it is enough.

Today I say that I am grateful for all of my responsibilities – because they indicate that I am living almost my entire life in service to others. And it means that just about everything I do matters. It actually matters to someone. Someone whom I love.

We used to believe that people had to hit bottom before they were willing to do anything about their drinking. Now we know that hitting bottom may be too late. For many, Dr Phil suggests, bottom is “six feet deep.” Research by William R Miller (of Motivational Interviewing fame) suggests that overdrinkers are willing to do something about their drinking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but before they opt for abstinence they would like to try to control their drinking. It seems natural to them to try moderation before choosing abstinence. If we help them try to moderate some will succeed and some will fail and some will opt for abstinence. What is important is that people face their problems sooner when moderation is an option. I would like to see abstinence-based treatment centers offer local programs for controlling or moderating drinking.
When treatment programs limit their focus to abstinence they miss a second opportunity: to effectively help those who relapse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Reports of typical relapse rates suggest that more than 2 out of 3 relapse after treatment. Some reports put the rate as high a 9 out of 10. But this news may not be a bad as it sounds. I believe that a harm reduction effect occurs as a result of abstinence-based treatment. I believe this because about six years ago I heard a radio interview with a man from California who talked about why California offered free chemical dependency treatment to anyone who wanted it.
“Moderation,” “harm reduction” and “control” seem like dirty words to many of us. The thought of trying to control their drinking seems like sheer madness to those in long-term recovery. Moderation makes much more sense to those starting out, trying to figure out what to do about the problems they are experiencing. Our failure to include moderation and harm reduction among our treatment protocols limits the options available to persons facing problems. Such lack of options means overdrinkers and drug users continue longer at dangerous levels.
It is sad but well known that most people wait a long time to get help for drug or drinking problems, and that most people relapse after addiction treatment. There is ample research-based evidence that we could reach people sooner and help relapsers minimize harm from use. Unfortunately most treatment centers focus exclusively on abstinence and 12-step facilitation. Many people believe that offering abstinence-based treatment is incompatible with moderation or minimizing harm. Research shows that programs designed to control or to minimize harm can lead participants to choose abstinence.
Something Positive
Given the high rates of relapse after treatment it seems sensible to teach harm reduction as part of treatment. Teaching abstinence-only practices can isolate the relapsed user for prolonged periods of harmful use. This is dangerous to the person who relapses but also dangerous to their children, partners, families, and communities. I would also like to see treatment centers offer harm-reduction groups and support to alumni who have relapsed so they are less isolated and have structure that helps them make positive changes. Alumni programs should offer help and support to all their alumni—not just those who are successful at staying abstinent.

I concluded that going through treatment has an unintentional harm-reduction effect. That makes me wonder what would happen if treatment centers intentionally taught harm reduction to persons going through abstinence-based treatment? After all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], addiction is defined as a “chronic relapsing disease,” so it makes sense that people should learn how to minimize harm in case of relapse. I don’t believe that learning about harm reduction will make someone more likely to relapse any more than having a plan in case of fire will cause a fire. Still many are afraid to teach harm reduction.

Dirty Words
Some people object to harm reduction (or moderation) because they believe that it promotes or condones drug use. Harm-reduction educators point out that abstinence is offered as one of many options in harm reduction and is recommended as the safest thing to do. But they accept that, in spite of the risks, many people choose to use alcohol and other drugs. Harm-reduction educators teach the safest ways to use alcohol and drugs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to minimize use, avoid drunk driving or contracting Hep C and HIV, how to plan for safer use, and how to avoid harming their family (don’t use in front of the kids). They help individuals and families stabilize as they reduce or eliminate risky behaviors. And just as in the Seattle Meth Madness group, many users who come for harm reduction decide they want help to stop entirely. Many go to treatment and succeed in maintaining abstinence, but of course some relapse.
Staying Out of Trouble
Unintentional Harm Reduction
Offering local programs for moderating drinking will allow more people to face their drinking problems sooner. Miller’s tools for reducing drinking are offered in his research-based book Controlling Your Drinking. His program helps people who are experiencing problems with their drinking consider how much they drink, name the problems they experience, and make a decision to “do something about their drinking.” Participants go on to assess their levels of drinking in comparison to other Americans, and consider how likely they are to moderate. Participants are encouraged to take a two-week break from drinking, learn to track their drinking and estimate blood alcohol concentration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and set goals for safe drinking. Over a four-to-six week period they practice slowly reducing their alcohol consumption to a problem-free level and keeping it there. Research participants were followed for a period of three to eight years after completing the program. Outcomes from Miller’s research program are encouraging but not rosy.
What would happen if treatment centers across the country accepted the natural patterns of addiction (that people want to try control before trying abstinence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that many who try abstinence end up continuing to drink and drug, that sustained abstinence is a great goal but one that some never reach)? What would happen if treatment centers offered moderation classes to those who want to try doing something about their problems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 12-step facilitation and other options for those seeking abstinence, included harm reduction education in treatment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and offered harm reduction support for alumni? I believe treatment centers would see increased interest in their services. Problem drinkers and druggers would get more effective help sooner and many would choose to become abstinent. People experiencing relapse would stay safer, and as California found, this would significantly reduce the costs to communities.
I am concerned that AA facilitation and abstinence-only programs may unintentionally act as barriers that prevent many from seeking help. Though deeply grateful for my own 12-step experiences, I recognize that 12-step concepts such as “disease” and “powerlessness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” or relying on a “Higher Power,” and labels such as “alcoholic” or “addict” are hard for many to swallow. Yet more than ninety percent of the treatment programs in the United States are dedicated to abstinence and twelve-step facilitation. Many people who drink too much are unable to get help because they are not ready to be labeled or consider lifelong abstinence. 12-steppers conveniently say they have not hit bottom.
More Interest In Treatment Services
It is time to accept that moderation and harm reduction are research-based and clinically-effective practices that often lead to abstinence. I would like moderation and harm reduction to be the bookends of the abstinence services currently offered. Treatment centers that do embrace moderation and harm reduction will be extremely popular,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will make more money, and save any number of lives.
Seattle Counseling Services, a nonprofit agency dedicated to the lesbian, gay, and transgender community runs a weekly group called “Meth Madness.” Meth Madness is a support group open to users even if high or tweaking. Attendees talk in safe surroundings with current and former meth users. Trained counselors offer support and teach how to stay hydrated and take care of veins, how to keep your teeth, and how to avoid contracting Hep C or HIV. The Meth Madness group created a surprising demand for abstinence-based treatment. Meth users who came for six months or so wanted help to quit meth entirely. Demand for help was so high that the agency started an abstinence-based treatment program.
The state found that significant money was saved when it offered free treatment. However, most of the people who went through treatment did not remain abstinent. But those who went through treatment got in less trouble and made few demands on social services. California saved money because over all there were fewer trips to the emergency room, less domestic violence and child abuse across the state, and fewer arrests and incarcerations. Such savings occurred even though most who went through treatment went back to using alcohol and other drugs.
Miller’s researchers found that in the year before follow-up about 15% (one in seven) had maintained complete moderation throughout the year (drinking less than 3 standard drinks per day and less than 10 drinks per week). Another 23% (almost one in four) reduced their drinking significantly to an average of 14 drinks per week but still experienced occasional alcohol-related problems. Another one in four (24%) had been totally abstinent for the previous year. Unfortunately more than one in three (37%) continued to drink at heavy and harmful levels. On the other hand almost two out of three (63%) were able to do something positive about their drinking by trying moderation. For one in four, starting with moderation lead them to choose abstinence.

Everyday I hear people around me talking about how high groceries are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how intense the banking environment is and how the economy is changing their “normal way of life”. Change is upon us. We are all having to get creative with our budgets and alter our habits whether we like it or not. Americans dislike having any limitations put on us. We whine and complain with neighbors and friends about all our problems. Certainly consulting and conferring with each other will make us feel better. Right?
One of the most challenging areas of life to keep this attitude is the area of personal finances. Are you in debt maybe dealing with money issues or limited resources?
Did you ever hear the stories about those people who have money, lose it and earn it back no big deal? They don’t criticize; they just make new plans. Having wealth is a fact to them just as “Today is an awful day.” is a fact to the complainer. More millionaires were created during The Great Depression than any other time in history. I am willing to bet the need of the times activated an innovative creative spirit in Americans. Everyday I hear the same attitudes in people around me.
Key #3 What Am I Grateful For Today?
Our attitude is our greatest resource. Attitudes drive behavior. We always have a choice as to what attitude to adopt. “An attitude of gratitude will transform everyday disappointments and frustrations” according to Melody Beattie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], best selling author. In her book Gratitude,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she says, “A sense of gratitude provides valuable perspective when facing problems and inspires thankfulness even when we don’t feel grateful.” I am sure if you are in dire straits right no gratitude in difficult to access right now. Many people look at resources as the physical things they have at our disposal for their everyday use ranging from food in the pantry to money in the bank account. Support or aid from people and organizations in times of need is a second and dynamic type of resource. There is a third type of resource we possess that is more important and more powerful than all other accessible resources. Although it is intangible, you are capable of drawing from it and replenishing it at any time. The available means of your mind, attitude and personal capabilities to deal with situations and meet difficulties effectively is the asset to which I am referring. Pulling from your inner stockpile of wherewithal is a sufficient substitute for anything lack of material sustenance.
Hubert Humphrey once said, “Oh, my friend, it's not what they take away from you that counts. It's what you do with what you have left.”
I broke my knee recently. Throughout my recovery I have realized things I would have considered problems are just inconveniences. My new perspective has given birth to my new 2 minute rule. It goes like this: I give myself 120 seconds of “poor me” and “my life is so bad” type ranting and complaining. After my little pity party, it is time to move on, end of story.
After that “Quit Complaining, Be Creative!” Complaining attracts more complainers. People don’t like to help ungrateful people. I know am willing to give more of my assistance to someone who gives me a big smile and a thank you after I help them.
Being angry has its place and expressing frustration can be healthy. Complaining, however, is not solution oriented, it is “FEEL SORRY FOR ME” oriented. I have seen people who complain as a way of life. This attitude is destructive, produces more dissatisfaction and breaks down momentum. Always remember, your attitude is your greatest resource!
Making the most of all your resources available is a philosophy of self discipline combined with an unstoppable attitude. I had times where I was discouraged and yet I stayed mightily determined to move forward no matter what. Sometimes, it seemed to be the only way I could make anything happen in my world.
Part of making the best of every situation is understanding and reminding yourself this is a temporary condition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not as permanent as it feels right now. Just tell yourself, “Do not take this personally. You are not the only one this has happened to. There are always solutions even if I don’t see them right now”.
So how can you enjoy your day even when the a/c in your car is not working and your back hurts? Ask yourself the question, “What am I grateful for today?” Then answer the question with all the things going right in your life. It may take a few minutes to find something. Set this reminder on your cell phone alarm, notes around the house or make it apart of your day with your family to reinforce appreciation. It may take months to activate a true sense of thankfulness and appreciation for your everyday blessings. Henry David Thoreau explains “as a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives."
I have three tools you can throw in your tool box and pull out any time. These three tools are keys to unlock the doors to all the resources you will ever need to flip every turn of fate to your benefit.

At my request, my friends are following through on cutting me off abruptly at the one hundred and twentieth second. Any more complaining than that and it clouds the good things in my life. Soon enough I forget what I have going for me and I start to believe what I am complaining about really IS A PROBLEM!
Not walking ever again is a problem. Getting someone to take out my garbage for a few weeks is an inconvenience. So if you can’t count your blessings, count your inconveniences but only for 2 minutes.
Remember, we are doing what we can with what we have where we are? There are plenty of things you can do to help yourself.

In a simplified way, running through the centre of you is a core of energy and flowing out from that core is your aura.
