It was not long before Ray was recounting his own experiences for me …
A few years ago, you gave us a scare
We thank God, that this is now clear

Streets bearing the names of English counties abound and instantly become a constant – if not a little nostalgic - reminder as I ambled through Hereford and Leicester, before reaching my ultimate destination in Sussex …

In his definitive study on the Japanese assault on Ceylon entitled “The Most Dangerous Moment”, Michael Tomlinson recalls that “shortly after one o’çlock (Sunday 5th April) with all men at action stations, numerous radio contacts were picked up (by HMS CORNWALL and HMS DORSETSHIRE…wireless silence was now broken to notify Admiral Somerville of their position (and) to report the enemy shadowing and possibility of an air attack. (The Japanese) wasted not a moment on sighting the two cruisers…(and) scored hit after hit from the word go….The line of attack seemed to have been carefully worked out in advance…

Born in the then Southern Rhodesian town of Bulawayo on 7 January 1923, Ray completed his education at the South African College High School in Cape Town. Although not yet seventeen years of age, he “bluffed” his real date of birth, and signed on for the Air Force in November of 1939. A change of heart soon found this intrepid young lad heading for Simon‘s Town, where he duly enlisted for service in the Navy. It was nor long before Ray was posted for duty to Klawer Camp on Red Hill - a naval installation that commanded an excellent view of the naval base in the bay below. However, by the Autumn of 1940, be was at sea, having been seconded to the 8-inch cruiser — HMS DORSETSHIRE — as an able seaman.

Shortly before midnight on Easter: Saturday — 4 April — HMS DORSETSHIRE, under the command of Captain Augustus Agar VC and HMS CORNWALL, under the command of Captain P C WnMainwaring (or was it Manwaring??) sailed from the Ceylonese port of Colombo. Their objective was to rendezvous with Admiral·Somervi1le some hundred of miles to the South at 16.00 on the following afternoon, and so be able to present a united front to the enemy.

In his certificate for “Wounds and Hurts”, Surgeon Captain OD Brownfeld notes that Ray sustained a “gun shot through (the) left ankle with (a) fracture of the neck of the astragalus, as well as a “shrapnel wound to the left of (the) middle of (the) sternum.” However, the doctor makes `no mention of the pieces of shrapnel that have surfaced throughout Ray’s body over the past sixty years!
 
Glancing suddenly at my watch, I realized how quickly the time had passed… a quick “photo-call” was needed to recall the event and Ray, with bags packed, was soon to return to Durban…. Like so many men and women of his era, his quiet unassuming manner certainly gives one no indication as to the emotional suffering that he surely endured at so young an age; however, his inner bravery and strength was to shine forth during an interview recorded by The Daily News – a Durban tabloid in September of 1987: Of course, in dangerous situations we were scared, but you have to react. The bravest thing we did was signing the recruiting form.”
0nly eight minutes after the first bomb hit, her bows rose above the sea, where by now most of her company were floundering in the hot oily water, and she was gone….
Much the same could be said for HMS CORNWALL….Lieutenant Geoffrey Grove relates:
“When at 1.40pm the Jap planes struck, the first bomb hit the CORNWALL’s port-side, astern…We had something like fifteen hits in about seven minutes and the poor old girl took up a bigger list than ever and started to settle….once clear of the ship (I) turned around and waited for her to go, which she did quite quietly, bows first. Her stern came up into the air and she slid down, one propeller revolving slowly.”
 
Ray was quick to recall that having abandoned ship, he found himself swimming in a sea that was both warm and dead calm, excepting for a layer of oil that had already begun to ooze up and out of the sunken cruiser. He was to spend some seven hours in the water, before being dragged into a life-boat to endure a full day and night, before being rescued by HMAS PALADIN and transported to Addu Atoll in the Maldive Islands. Here Ray was transferred to a merchant ship to await the arrival of the hospital ship HMNS VITA, aboard which he returned to South Africa towards the end of April.

Young Ray Lock, one of the Dorsetshire’s crew serving a 4 inch ack-ack gun amidships and fuming at their hopelessly restricted field of fire, found himself flung to the deck ten feet below by a blast from a bomb. Shaken, he got to his feet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], intent on getting back to the gun; but was startled to see only two blackened stumps, where the twin gun barrels had been and the rest of the crew dead or badly wounded. Only some time later, noticing a squelching sound in his shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], did he find them filling with blood and realized that he was seriously wounded in the chest and legs …

According to the American Psychiatric Association,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 10 percent of the entire U.S. population has been diagnosed with a chronic form of post-traumatic stress. Some of the wide-ranging symptoms of PTSD, which normally don't peak until at least a month after an emotionally distressing or overwhelming event occurs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are disturbing sense of memory and an acute emotional detachment from loved or cherished ones.
There may still be a great social stigma attached to this unnerving illness. Yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it really never hurts to let your feelings out if your life reaches an all-too-uncontrollable psychological or emotional breaking point.
Although PTSD affects veterans first and foremost, the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) currently reported that anxiety-ridden civilians are also directly impacted. Intrusive "flashbacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," or recurring nightmares, can take place during sleep as well as during daytime. An exaggerated startle response causes them to feel a constant sense of grave danger in public, even if the environment surrounding them isn't exactly a Middle Eastern war zone. Additionally, their explosive biochemical imbalances may automatically trigger persistent thoughts of suicide for no apparent reason.

They are not clinically proven to "cure" PTSD in any shape or form, but the National Institute of Mental Health has recently suggested that patients should continue to take prescribed drugs, such as Paxil and Zoloft, to improve their overarching social capabilities through psychotherapy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], peer counseling consultations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or other effective forms of talk therapy.
You can also book an appointment with a one-on-one behavioral health care provider who specializes in relaxation techniques if you happen to get completely out of control with your already fragile state of mind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some people need not have lived through these headline-fodder atrocities to experience the almost deadly effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Rape victims,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], domestic violence victims, child molestation victims,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or bitter divorced couples may also fail to just "get over it."
Once you finally get your act together, you may not exactly be "cured," but you might as well feel better than you did before.
However, being afflicted with PTSD doesn't have to be all that life-shattering.
9/11. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The epic tsunami/earthquake in Southeast Asia on December 26,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2004. Hurricane Katrina. The Virginia Tech Massacre. There have quite a few catastrophic events over the past several years.

Take a moment to reflect on your interactions with your children today. What was the general tone of the day? What emotions predominated for you? Were you calm, listening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], curious, frustrated, angry, or impatient? What message do you feel your child will take to bed with them tonight?
One of the great challenges of parenting is finding a balance between allowing our kids to discover who they are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while teaching them about expectations, rules and consequences. Sometimes in our attempts to do so, we may find ourselves frustrated, tired, being manipulated or just beaten down. In those moments we might react with anger and “put our foot down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” or give up and let things slide. In my work with adolescents at Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Programs ( I have heard something over and over that parents have a hard time believing--in their heart of hearts, teenagers say “Please have boundaries and expectations for me. Be consistent. I need to know you will keep me safe, even if I don’t act like it!”
As parents, a primary goal is to assist our children in developing self-efficacy and good judgment. By doing so we give them tools to interact with others in settings outside the home, advocate for themselves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and make good choices when we are not around. The foundational process of developing these traits is through the child’s own experience of making choices and experiencing the consequences of those choices.
Research shows that in seeking cooperation from your child, how you communicate your expectations may be the most significant variable--the old adage is really true--”it’s not only what you say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but how you say it.” Our use of language, and yes, tone of voice, is not lost on our children. As dictators around the world can attest, through domination and control you can instill compliance, but at what cost? There is usually an uprising or mutiny in the works as a result. In considering the manner in which we communicate our expectations and model our values to our kids, several points are worth noting:
Firstly, compliance comes from investment in the outcome. One way to gain your child’s investment is to instill the underlying values and intention behind expectations. For example, if the rule is to “look both ways before crossing the street,” the rule is more effective if the child knows the intention is “to keep you safe.” This can extend to moral rules, rules of safety, and rules of social interaction, such as: “Saying ‘please’ is part of the values of our family. It shows respect to the person you are asking to help you.” Through helping your child understand that rules and expectations aren’t about “because I said so,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” but are rooted in a positive intention, they can gain investment and identify how it can benefit them.
Secondly, cooperation comes from relationship. Certainly, in all relationships there are good days and bad days, when we struggle with moments of conflict. When you interact with your teen in those not-so-happy moments, take a minute to notice how you are communicating--are you reacting, or are you responding? Reacting can be identified as an unconscious, often emotion-driven communication style. Generally when we are reacting (or reactive) we are in “defensive” mode, and not really paying attention to what we are saying and communicating. We are speaking from our emotional brain, rather than the area of the brain that is the command center of judgment and weighing consequences.
Reacting can sometimes be expressed through anger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], irritation, sarcasm or “shutting down.” Responding, by contrast, is a conscious, thoughtful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], relationship-based way of communicating. This is where “mindfulness” comes into play, allowing us to respond in a thoughtful manner rather than in an unconscious manner. What is the real difference? Your teen will likely see a reaction as being an invitation to do battle with you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a response as an invitation to engage in real communication. Reacting often breeds conflict, while responding often moves towards a resolution. Each time you respond rather than react,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you are building your relationship, and demonstrating that you respect your child enough to communicate authentically.
Lastly, what is the real message we ultimately want to send to our kids? Obey me because I am the adult? Fear me? Probably not. Likely the message we are hoping to send is, “I want you to grow up happy and responsible and make good choices.” This message is delivered most effectively by demonstrating your belief that your child has the capacity to exercise good judgment, that you have faith in their inherent goodness, that you are proud of them and their innate capacities. We can demonstrate these beliefs by being “neither too tight nor too loose.” If we hover about and control everything our children do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we rob them of the opportunity to learn from the consequences of their choices. If we dominate or control them in an effort to create compliance, once we aren’t there they won’t have the experience of figuring things out on their own.
As an alternative, try the middle way, and be an advocate for your child. Allow them to fail, to make mistakes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to develop judgment and discernment, yet be there to help them sort it out. Be genuinely interested in what they think and feel, be empathetic and curious, fair and consistent. It isn’t a quick fix, but a cumulative process that builds over time, interaction by interaction.
So next time your child tests your rules, remember that deep down, they actually want you to be consistent and follow through. Take a breath, respond with intention, and know you are adding one more piece to the foundation that will build a healthy, self-reliant and confident young adult.

I began doing the Daniel Fast on June 8, 2012 and have been successful for 3 days. What I have found so far is that there’s little need to be concerned about protein intake if you are ilmiting food intake from animals, as long as you know your options. Protein is very easy to obtain with a balanced diet and good food choices.
If you’re allergic to soy or just don’t like the taste, you still have other options for making a healthy vegetarian meal. But because they are not complete, you should pair certain foods together to cover your bases and get all of the essential amino acids you need in one vegetarian dish.

Yesterday, I added some new culture to my family’s diet with some delicious Afghani food. My dear friend Ghizal and I both packed up our little ones (both 3 years old and best buds!) along for a ride to the Middle Eastern specialty store in Houston. What a learning experience! I was surprised at the selection available in organic and specialty health products, though I shouldn’t be. The culture I was experiencing supports a strong Mediterranean-type diet, with such a fresh appeal. The amount of aromatic spices and savory sauces and dips available was delightful. I was like a kid in the candy store,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I plan to go back very soon!
The prices were comparable, and in some cases, better than the general market’s. I found the tofu I had been searching for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grabbed some wonderful Tzitziki sauce, and overindulged in teas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spices, and olives. The pita bread I bought fresh from the in-house bakery was so chewy and delightful, and a day later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the kids have almost finished it! I’m definitely going to get more of that next time, and bake it gently to make pita chips for the kids.

Frozen veggies are such a smart choice, as the vitamins and minerals in them are well-preserved from the freezing process.
Something that Ghizal and I noticed recently is something that has been resonating in me the more she and I get to know each other. The Hispanic and the Middle Eastern cultures are so similar in traditions, flavors, values, and much more. It is a fun experience to learn more about each other, and what we value most. She is even teaching me some Farsi.
The lesson I am learning is to embrace the joy of learning about cultures different than my own. As adults we know how difficult it can be to change our habits. Here are common ways I suggest to parents to correct their teens’ negative thinking:
1. Challenge your teen’s negative thinking: Often times, you can challenge your teens negative thinking through logic alone. For example, if your teen holds the belief that new people tend not to like him ask him what he basis this conclusion on. Is it a preconceived expectation that tends to colour his view of reality? Is it based on some past experiences that lead him to believe every future experience will be the same? Future predictions, believing to be able to read others’ minds, all or nothing thinking, and catastrophizing are some of the major areas of faulty thinking.
2. Challenge your teen to step out of the comfort zone: Teens are willing to try new things if they are not worried about failing and of what that failure means. If the temporary failure is considered a part of the process and if it can be separated from what that means about him, perceived failure is no longer so threatening. Clarify this for your teen and challenge him to try something he otherwise wouldn’t.
3. A failure is not a failure: As a society we have conditioned ourselves to believe that anytime something does not work out as planned it is a failure instead of a ‘learning lesson.’ The word failure is defeating and has a note of finality in it where as a learning lessons sounds more positive and allows room for improvement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. In my eyes failures only happen when people give up. Anytime your teen refers to ‘failures’ ask him to look deeper into the situation and ask him what he has learned and what he would do differently if he could do it again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Yes, you must watch your thinking and speaking patterns (keep a journal to help you get a sense of your positivity/negativity patterns). Practice steps 1 to 3 in front of your teen. A habit of negative thinking is easy to come by. Let’s just consider the people around us, the television, the radio,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and our community as a whole.
